Book Review: Someone We Know

Someone We Know by Shari Lapena

Goodreads Summary:

Maybe you don't know your neighbors as well as you thought you did . . .

"This is a very difficult letter to write. I hope you will not hate us too much. . . My son broke into your home recently while you were out."

In a quiet, leafy suburb in upstate New York, a teenager has been sneaking into houses--and into the owners' computers as well--learning their secrets, and maybe sharing some of them, too.

Who is he, and what might he have uncovered? After two anonymous letters are received, whispers start to circulate, and suspicion mounts. And when a woman down the street is found murdered, the tension reaches the breaking point. Who killed her? Who knows more than they're telling? And how far will all these very nice people go to protect their own secrets?

In this neighborhood, it's not just the husbands and wives who play games. Here, everyone in the family has something to hide . . .

You never really know what people are capable of.

My Review:
2/5 Stars

Everyone and I mean everyone keeps secrets. It’s a little frightful how little we know about the people across the street from us, let alone the people that live with us behind closed doors.

This story is all about a web of lies, teenagers run amuck, affairs, and neighborhood gossip. With damming evidence would you still protect those you think you love?

Lapena attempted to stream a web and keep the reader on their toes by adding an additional layer at every page. But honestly it felt like was a forced rabbit hole.

The characters were all developed at different paces, which created an interesting element. We would learn plenty about 1 while they would be having a discussion about  another and anticipate being filled in with the backstory of the corresponding character. However I felt that several characters where left with loose character ends as a push to keep the mystery alive.

The ending seemed rushed, but at the same time trying to set up an alternate route for a sequel. I need to look into if one has been written however I’m not sure that I will pick it up.
